An Indian-American doctor offered a five-point solution, which he called Panchamrit, to solve the cancer crisis in India. According to his five-point solution, declaring cancer a notifiable disease, subsidizing cancer screening, and establishing a command-and-control center were the most prominent suggestions.
He explained that the government should acquire accurate cancer incidence and prevalence data to identify high-density areas and how to allot resources. He added that cancer should be considered a notifiable disease.
Dr. Dattatreyudu Nori noted that since the establishment of the National Cancer Institute of India in 2018, significant progress has been made. However, he added that this is not enough. He explained that important programs have to be put on a fast track and an accelerated path.
While talking about subsidized cancer care for cancer treatment in many states, he explained that such services should also be provided for cancer screening. He added that this measure can encourage people to opt for free cancer screenings.
Dr. Nori recommended the establishment of a cancer command and control (CCC) center in India, which will be the apex body for taking final decisions on all the issues related to the fight against cancer in India. The CCC should collect five-year data from the Medicare database from each state and the central program and develop cancer′s geographical distribution.
He explained that using this data, a CANCER ATLAS should be developed, which should show cancer information for every district and state and be updated every five years. Lastly, he added that it is crucial to involve non-resident Indians and organizations like the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) in the fight against cancer in India. He explained that these organizations can provide scientific and technical help to cancer centers, provide education and training fellowships to oncologists, etc.
